Rag Quilt Kits

Sometimes the process of choosing fabrics, battings, and threads can be one of the funnest parts of making a rag quilt. However, for some people, it can be quite overwhelming.

Suppose you just can’t decide which fabrics work well together. Suppose you can’t find what you are looking for. Or, perhaps you are just short on time.

A very good alternative can be to purchase a kit with all of the fabrics already picked out. Some kits even come with pre-fringed edges! Some may including batting.

When deciding on a kit, here are some things to watch for, so read the description carefully.

  • What is the final size quilt that the kit will make?  Sometimes a kit may LOOK like a lot of fabric, but then when you get it put together, it may not be as large as you thought. (And then finding more of the same fabrics may be difficult).
  • Is batting or fleece included?  If the kit doesn’t include something for your middle layer, you’ll want to plan appropriately.  I would recommend that you ask the seller if they also have batting available.  Many of them do.  If you are purchasing a kit from Ebay (an excellent source of kits), you can also browse ebay to find batting sets.
  • If you are buying your batting separate, be sure it’s enough.  If your fabric pieces and your batting are both pre-cut, make sure they “match”.  In other words, of your fabrics are pre-cut to 6″ squares, you don’t want to purchase 7″ batting squares.
  • Be sure to check for fabric type.   If you have your mind set on flannel, just make sure that the kit is for flannel fabric.  The same goes for cotton.

Ebay is an excellent place for purchasing rag quilt kits.   There is usually quite a good selection of fabric types/colors and also batting squares.   And most of the time, the prices are amazing!  I enjoy purchasing kits on ebay, because most sellers ship quickly and once my kit arrives, I’m ready to sew!  Be sure to check the seller’s feedback!
